"Skiers against Oil" Action in Northern Russia
Nikolay Bratenkov, Komi activist, one of the leaders of local NGO Save Pechora Committee with the help of Greenpeace Russia volunteer project #StopOilSpills organized a race from one settlement to another, to meet with local people and encourage hope for a better future without oil spills as part of the global movement to Break Free from fossil fuels. “It is necessary to adopt law to replace all pipelines that exceed their service life because the accidents that happen here and all oil that is spilt poison water that we drink and fish that we eat” – says Nikolay. 8000 people in Komi are trapped in industrial zone of Lukoil. When you live in a big city, it never occurs to you that somewhere else, people are suffering from problems such as these. Skiers went 25 km and met local people in 5 villages. They want Lukoil to stop barbarous industrial exploration of Komi lands.
