World’s First Purpose-built Floating Nuclear Power Plant Bound for the Arctic
Greenpeace protest Rosatom’s “Akademik Lomonosov”, the world’s first floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov, South of the island of Lolland, Denmark. The plant has left St. Petersburg, Russia, where it was constructed. It will be towed to the Northern Russian port of Murmansk, where it will be loaded with nuclear fuel and tested. It is planned that in 2019 it will be towed through the Northern Sea Route and put to use near Pevek, in Chutkotka, to power the town, the port and fossil fuel extraction. Greenpeace struggles to stop Rosatom’s irresponsible project in the Arctic and to prevent its replication in other parts of the world.
