Monkey Swimming in Contaminated Water after Oil Spill in Balikpapan
Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) known as the bekantan in Indonesia, swim in the water in mangrove forest contaminated by oil in Kariangau village, Balikpapan Bay, East Kalimantan. An oil spill off Balikpapan bay in Borneo island that led to five deaths and the declaration of a state of emergency, was caused by the burst of an undersea pipe belonging to Indonesia's state oil company Pertamina.
