Greenpeace activists prevent a freighter from unloading its cargo of newsprint in Terneuzen. On the hull of the ship they paint the text 'Kranten oerbosvrij', which translates to English as 'Newspapers forests free'. The paper on board is from the company Abitibi-Consolidated, which is guilty of the large-scale destruction of Canadian forests. They produce yearly 26,000 tonnes of newsprint and are the most important supplier in Canada. Greenpeace's study shows that the paper of Abitibi consists of over 90% of new wood fibres. The major Dutch newspaper publishers PCM, Wegener and The Telegraaf Media Group are all customer of Abitibi. Newspapers like NRC, Telegraaf and Volkskrant are printed on paper directly originating from the forests. Greenpeace urges the government to take its responsibility. They must see to that the Dutch import of paper will not lead to the disappearance of more forests.
