Toxics Action Spolana Chemical Plant in Czech Republic
A year after the floods, Greenpeace activists from seven countries occupy the 200 meter high chimney at Spolana Neratovice, the chemical factory situated on the bank of the River Elbe in the Czech Republic. The climbers unfold a gigantic banner reading 'Stop dioxin, mercury, PCB, HCB' and call on the management of Spolana to accept corporate responsibility for toxic pollution of the surrounding area and demand that the chemical factory compensates all its victims. Greenpeace has been demanding for years that Spolana secures its surroundings against toxic pollution from its premises and cleans up contaminated soil and buildings. The area of Spolana was flooded during record floods in 2002 and chemicals leaked into the river.
