Palm Oil Industry Documentation in Papua New Guinea
The Palm Oil industry in Papua New Guinea is raising issues of both social and environmental concern. Land belonging to indigenous people has been acquired by the government for growing the crop. Workers on the plantations are not given proper safety equipment and water supplies have been contaminated affecting the health of local communities. The burning of forest areas for Palm Oil is a massive environmental hazard as carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, making a substantial contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.
