Fiamma Straneo, from the physical oceanography Dept at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, installs moorings which will be collected in summer 2010.
She deploys an expendable bathythermograph or XBT which is fired through the loose ice debris into the fjord below. Data concerning temperature and depth is received through a thin wire which links the device with the helicopter.
