Dressing in Traditional Costume in Xinping
Young girls, unmarried women, married women and elderly women have different costumes for their age. The colourful costume of Dai people in Gasa is reported by outside media as a symbol of a happy life. However, the women themselves say that people in the outside world would not understand how hard it is to raise one pig or harvest one grain of rice.

Rice Farmers Photography Project in China
Five rice farmers from the Yunnan Province with no experience in photography were given a camera and asked to document their sustainable rice farming methods over the space of a year to highlight the potential of ecological agriculture. The farmers are part of a strong, local community, indigenous to the area. They work closely with the land, cultivating the rice and soil. The project, entitled ‘Rice is Life’ presents authentic evidence to show the importance of rice and ecology and the interaction between rice and culture amongst rice farmers. This is set against the growing trend in genetically engineered rice and the potential risks involved.
