Thermokarst Lake in Yamal Peninsula
Anatoliy Tolia, a Nenet man with his three children, next to thermokarst lake appeared around the edge of what used to be a large lake the indigenous people relied on for fishing. A thermokarst lake, also called a thaw lake or cave-in lake, is a body of freshwater, that is formed in a depression by meltwater from thawing permafrost. Anatoliy pokes the water to demonstrate the presence of gas. After the subsidence all the water from the large lake ran out and the water level dropped around 8 meters. The entire region is under heavy threat from global warming as temperatures increase and Russia’s ancient permafrost melts.
