Balloon Release at Darlington Hearings
Greenpeace releases a weather balloon at the environmental assessment hearings on the future of the Darlington reactors to show the range of potential fallout. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has asked the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) for approval to spend $8 – 14 billion to run the four Darlington reactors until 2055. The environmental assessment hearings ran from December 3rd to 6th, 2012. Greenpeace has repeatedly asked the CNSC to consider whether Ontario’s current emergency plans could cope with a large accidental radiation release, but it has refused.
