The Mawei River in Sichuan
A slag heap near the Mawei River.
Greenpeace estimates that the fluoride content of this slag heap has reached 802 mg/l. According to state regulation, any figure over 100 mg/1 is hazardous and should not be within 150 meters of any water.
Baiyi Village, Mianzhu City, Sichuan Province.
Greenpeace is currently investigating the manufacture of phosphate fertiliser in Sichuan.
Chemical fertilizers play an integral role in industrial agriculture and food production. However, its manufacture has proven to be highly polluting, contributing to wide-spread environmental contamination and causing distress for local communities living in the vicinity of the production facilities.
