Tavolo Villagers Perform Ritual in Papua New Guinea
Members of Tavolo village perform the Tumbuan ritual to mark the end of a mourning period for a boy who died. Young men fast for days in the forest, during the dance and return in a trance; as one of their ancestors. The dance re-affirms their connection to and the importance of their forest. Tavolo FSC certified community forest management area in New Britain, Papua New Guinea. The forest provides food, medicine, craft and building materials for the Tavolo community.
