Support for Windfarm Proposal in Wellington
Greenpeace action in support of the West Wind Project, Civic Square, Wellington. Environmental activists gathered this morning outside the old town hall in Wellington with model wind turbines in tow to support a proposal to build New Zealand’s biggest wind farm on the western coast of Wellington. The project of 210 megawatts will be able to power 110,000 homes in the Wellington, Porirua and Lower Hutt region and will avoid the emission of 520,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year if the electricity were to be generated using coal. That's the equivalent to taking 120,000 cars off the road every year or planting 777,000 trees. The windfarm was successfully voted in in December 2005.
