San Pedro River Pollution in Mexico
A road with a warning sign reading "Do not bathe, filthy water" close to the San Pedro River, located near Aguascalientes city. The river receives discharges from different types of industries like textiles, including the Lavamex facility. This tributary reaches the Santiago River, in the neighboring state of Jalisco, which is one of the most polluted rivers in Mexico. In a country where more than 70% of water bodies are polluted. Less than 20 parameters are regulated regarding discharge into national water bodies, while hundreds of chemicals are used and released each day. A sample taken by Greenpeace activists and analyzed in the University of Exeter showed presence of toxic chemicals like nonyl phenol, a hormonal disruptor.
