Slag Heap Investigation in China
Greenpeace investigates a slag heap belonging to the Hongda Group facility. Greenpeace found out that the fluoride content of the leaching solution of the 32.9 acres phosphogypsum slag heap is 277 mg/l, which is much higher than 100 mg/l. According to the state regulations, hazardous waste should stay away from at least 150 meters of surface water bodies. Greenpeace is currently investigating the manufacture of phosphate fertiliser in Sichuan, China. Chemical fertilizers play an integral role in industrial agriculture and food production. However, its manufacture has proven to be highly polluting, contributing to wide-spread environmental contamination and causing distress for local communities living in the vicinity of the production facilities.
