Greenpeace activist Brikesh Singh climbs a tree in Padmapur, near Chandrapur to occupy the tree – which is now called ‘Junglistan Nivas’ – for a month. Junglistan Nivas has a very small room built on an already existing machan or tree house. It took a Greenpeace team one month to build the tree house and it was erected without damaging the tree in anyway. Two local NGOs helped Greenpeace build the tree house. During his stay, Mr Singh will be accompanied by at least one person – a Greenpeace volunteer or a representative of the local NGO Eco Pro – on a rotation basis at all times to ensure security. He uses a solar lantern for light and solar panels are being fitted to help him charge his laptop and phone. The tree house has basic amenities including a mattress and drinking water. With this activity Mr Singh and Greenpeace call for the protection of the Chandrapur forest and ask the Indian government to stop all new coal mining allocations and forest clearances.
