NASA Image of the Rim Fire in California
On August 26, 2013, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of the Rim Fire burning in and near Yosemite National Park. Red outlines indicate hot spots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures associated with fire. The fire's perimeter is at least 246,350 acres, according the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire was caused by a hunter who let an illegal fire get out of control.
