Charlotte Johansen Sews a Greenlandic National Dress
Lara is the 6 year old daughter of Tummas and Laila Vilhelm. Her great Grandma, Charlotte Johansen, aged 81 is putting the finishing touches to her Kalaallisuuk. This Greenlandic national dress is often worn by Greenlanders for special occasions. Lara will wear the outfit for her first day at school the next morning, in her home town, Nuuk, the capitol of Greenland. Charlotte is aged 81, she has 11 children and 29 grandchildren. She is sewing the whole costume by hand. Greenpeace and an independent NASA-funded scientist completed measurements of melt lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet that show its vulnerability to warming temperatures. The measurements are the last scheduled activity as the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise wraps up its two-month expedition to document the impacts of climate change on Greenland's ice sheet and glaciers.
