Over the course of a year, from April 2019 to April 2020, an epic voyage from the Arctic to the Antarctic saw hundreds of scientists, journalists, campaigners and around 13 world-leading photographers set sail to document the many threats facing the world’s oceans. The Pole to Pole expedition was part of a Greenpeace campaign calling for a Global Ocean Treaty on the table at the United Nations that would allow the creation of protected areas, or ‘ocean sanctuaries’, across our blue planet.

It was not an easy task. Each group that took part in the journey stayed on board for many weeks at a time, enduring huge waves, harsh weather and challenging logistics. Here, some of these award-winning photographers choose their favourite photos from the expedition and tell the stories behind them.
