Six Greenpeace activists unfurl a banner on a 177 m high building in the city of Mersin, the site of the planned first nuclear power plant in Turkey. The banner message in Turkish (“Nükleer pahaliya patlar”) has multiple meanings: "Nuclear is costly” and “Nuclear will explode”.
Greenpeace Turkey recently filed a court case against the Environmental Impact Assessment of the power plant, raising many arguments including the fact that the EIA report failed to acknowledge a number of issues including severe accidents and that the spent fuel (highly active nuclear waste) would have to be shipped along the Bosphorus strait, directly through the center of Istanbul, a megacity with 20 million inhabitants.
Greenpeace demands that the EIA report of the planned NPP is cancelled and Turkey drops nuclear plans and invests in energy efficiency and renewable energy.
