The Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland has calved an iceberg 87 square kilometers in size. In 2009 Greenpeace supported a team of independent scientists working on the Petermann Glacier to enhance understanding of the impacts of global warming on the Greenland ice sheet.

The loss of the ice from the floating tongue of the Petermann Glacier is almost certain to speed up the rate at which ice from the Greenland ice sheet melts into the oceans.
