Indonesia’s current fires crisis is the worst since the catastrophic season of 2015. Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry estimates that the fires have burned 328,722 hectares (more than 800,000 acres) since the start of 2019 until July/August. This figure does not include some of the worst fires which have burned further areas during September.

This month, Greenpeace Indonesia released mapping analysis showing that no serious civil or administrative sanctions have been given to the ten palm oil companies with the largest areas of burned land from 2015 to 2018. Furthermore, the Indonesian government has not revoked a single palm oil licence due to forest fires.
