Greenpeace Japan releases the results of the investigations into sediment contamination along the Pacific coast of Fukushima prefecture, which was conducted before and during the 5-year anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster earlier this year.
According to the released results, radioactive contamination in the seabed off the Fukushima coast is hundreds of times above pre-2011 levels, while contamination in local rivers is up to 200 times higher than ocean sediment.
The report Atomic Depths, gives the results of the sampling as well as a review of the current science on marine sediment contamination in the near coast environment. The report also includes the results of the baseline survey work in Lake Biwa, Shiga prefecture. The lake is at risk of contamination in the event of a severe accident at the Kansai Electric reactors in nearby Fukui prefecture. The Kansai reactors are a central focus of the Energy Revolution Japan project as we campaign to stop their restart and push for a transition to renewable energy in the region. Currently, all Kansai reactors remain shutdown, including as a result of legal victories brought by citizens in Shiga prefecture. Lake Biwa supplies drinking water to 14 million people in the region. The purpose of the Lake Biwa work is to contrast the levels of cesium contamination now found in the river systems and lakes of Fukushima with those in Biwa.
