Greenpeace activists on a peaceful protest outside the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy send a clear message to the Greek Minister, on the very day new lease contracts were signed for oil and gas exploration and drilling in two offshore blocks in Western Greece. Mr. Stathakis, stop being a puppet of the oil companies. Don’t give away our beautiful land and sea to them.
After Epirus in western Greece, the sea southwest of Crete, part of the Ionian Sea and more areas, another part of the Ionian Sea was given away to the Greek company Hellenic Petroleum and the Spanish multinational Repsol, even including an area that was protected just a few months ago by a Presidential Decree.
We demand that all oil exploration and drilling plans are cancelled and we ask for a national Energy and Climate Action Plan compliant with the scientific community’s warnings and in line with global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
