The Sunderbans river delta region is an area which is particularly ecologically sensitive. Crew of the Rainbow Warrior plant mangroves with the local people to help to protect the coast from erosion and provide nutrients for fish. The mangroves will also capture carbon in their extensive root systems and help to keep carbon in the soil. Scientists estimate that over 70,000 people will be displaced from the Sunderbans due to sea level rise by the year 2030.
