Shell’s oil rig, the Kulluk, runs aground after being towed from the Arctic back to Seattle, USA. Days of effort trying to guide the mobile offshore drilling unit through stormy Alaskan seas hit a crisis on 31 Dec, when crew members were forced to disconnect the rig from its tow line and the vessel ran aground on Sitkalidak Island just south of Kodiak. Six days later the Kulluk is refloated and taken to Kiliuda Bay for repairs and a survey.
