This forest complex has one of the world’s highest recorded diversities of plants and supports key populations of critically endangered Sumatran elephants and tigers. It was designated a national park in 2004, but most of the natural forest in and around the Tesso Nilo has already been replaced by industrial pulp and palm oil plantations.
