Shoot: Green Future for Russia
GP1SU26L
On June 21, a diesel fuel leak occurred at a power plant in the village of Argakhtakh in northeast Yakutia, due to which 5 tons of oil products leaked into the Alazeya River. This accident is similar to the one that occurred in Norilsk in late May, just on a smaller scale.
Such accidents can happen far more frequently due to climate change and permafrost melting.
Transportation and storage of diesel fuel pose risks to the fragile nature of the Arctic. A recent accident in Norilsk and the accident that has just happened in Yakutia are examples of what it can be like.
The Russian government must take serious measures to combat climate change and move forward with a just transition to end the oil age, to prevent the multiplying threats of climate change in the future.
