Avaaz and Greenpeace deliver the first European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) to EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli signed by over 1 million European citizens. The ECI is one of the main innovations of the Lisbon Treaty and is meant to allow citizens to request changes in European law.The initiative calls on the Commission to ban genetically modified (GM) crops until a new independent, ethical, scientific body is established to assess their impact. The 1 million signatures were included in a 380-square-meter piece of 3D pavement art placed in front of the European Commission building.
