Republika power plant, the oldest functioning coal plant in Europe was turned into a “museum” by Greenpeace activists. The 68-year-old facility is located in the town of Pernik, historically a center of the coal industry in Bulgaria. Recognizing its significant role in the development of the country in the 20th century, this means for energy production belongs to the past as economically unprofitable, polluting and fueling climate change.
20 activists from Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Hungary joined the action for clean air and just transition beyond coal. Raising messages “Change the energy, not the climate”, “Future for the people, not for coal” and “1951 - ????”, they insisted on the phase out of dirty fossil fuels in Bulgaria as clean air is a right for all and dealing with the climate emergency requires an international effort.
