Shoot: Nisshin Maru Returns from Whaling Expedition

GP01Q15
The Japanese factory ship Nisshin Maru arrives back to the Japanese port of Shimonoseki, from its most recent whaling expedition to the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary. This year's whale catch was 679 minke and 1 fin whale - well below the fleet's usual targets, but still 680 whales too many. Greenpeace met the Nisshin Maru with placards reading “Southern Ocean Whaling: Cover-ups, Lies, Yen1.2B in Taxes” in front of the ship. The placards refer to the huge taxpayer subsidies given to the fleet and the cover-ups that have occurred since Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki exposed an embezzlement ring inside the fleet last year. As a result of their activities to expose the embezzlement, the activists are on trial and facing up to ten years in prison, yet nothing has been done to address the scandal and the real criminals behind the embezzlement. Greenpeace is calling for all charges against Sato and Suzuki to be dropped, and for an end to whaling in the Southern Ocean.
