Shoot: Departure Clean Scrap Ship Otapan in Rotterdam

GP01MN5
The scrap ship Otapan leaves the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands for Turkey again, but this time the ship is clean and has the correct export permit. The Dutch government sends the ship to a Turkish scrap yard. They removed all the tonnes of asbestos and other toxics before departure. In 2006 Greenpeace caused a lot of fuss with the revelation that the former asbestos tanker contained much more asbestos than the 1,000 kilos the Ministry of VROM (Housing, Regional Development and the Environment) mentioned in the export permit. Nevertheless the ship was on its way to the Turkish Aliaga. Turkey however refused to accept the ship and it had to return to the Netherlands. Under pressure of Greenpeace and other NGO's, the Ministry of VROM has cleaned the ship, so it can leave for Turkey again.
