Shoot: Genetic Engineering Action Sampling Maize of Cargo Ship Pakrac Rotterdam the Netherlands
GP01MKR
Members of a Greenpeace Biosafety Patrol took samples of maize from the cargo of American cargo ship 'Pakrac'. The maize which was unloaded in Rotterdam was then transhipped onto smaller ships for inland navigation. Greenpeace managed to lay hand on samples of two different cargos and had them tested in a specialized lab. De tests showed that the cargo contained GE Herculex RW 59122 maize gluten, produced by Pioneer/Dow. This type of GE maize is grown in the US, but is not allowed in the European Union. The Dutch 'Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit' (Food and Goods Authority) promised to raise the controls on the import from 10 to 25% until further regulation on European level. Some part of the maize was already processed in cattle feed, and in some cases this feed was already consumed. The Dutch 'Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit' is confiscating the rest of the cargo and will send it back to the US or have it destroyed it in the Netherlands.
