Greenpeace activists, dressed like waiters, serve bottles with radioactive 'champagne', named 'champagne nucleaire', to the visitors at the conventions of the political parties VVD and CDA in the Netherlands. The bottles are filled with radioactive groundwater, pumped up at a leaking storage for nuclear waste in La Hague in France. This is the same location where the nuclear waste of the Dutch power station Borssele is dumped. The groundwater in La Hague is 20,000 times more radioactive than common groundwater. The same problem rises with the storage of nuclear waste in the French Champagne region. With this action Greenpeace wants to confront the CDA and VVD with the causes of their intention to move on with nuclear energy. In their election programs both parties are positive about nuclear energy and see it as solution for climate change, although there is no answer for the nuclear waste. They also claim that nuclear energy is necessary, because positive (clean) energy will not be able to provide the Netherlands with enough energy. The Energy Revolution Scenario produced by Greenpeace, the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) and eleven research institutes, shows however that renewable energy, combined with efficiencies from the ‘smart use’ of energy, can deliver half of the world’s energy needs by 2050. The report demonstrates that the phasing out of nuclear power and massively reducing CO2-emissions is possible.
