Twelve members of “Kids For Forests” went on a bicycle tour to raise awareness on ancient forests. The tour went past Basel, Aarau, Olten, Solothurn and finally Bern. In Bern the children handed over a petition with 1500 under-way collected signatures to the federal council: The young people are asking the council to make their administration “ancient forest-friendly”.
Hans-Rudolf Dörig, secretary of the Department Leuenberger, received the petition for the absent Moritz Leuenberger. John Buehler (16), from Thunstetten (BE) spoke on behalf of ‘Kids for Forests’: "We congratulate the federal council for the things they have done so far and we'd like to give the council a folder with samples of ancient forests-friendly paper. We hope that the council will improve itself even more.”
Kids for Forests wants to ensure their voice is heard and the protection of the ancient forests is taken seriously, because it ultimately is about our future and we’d like to live with, and not against, nature.
The paper dilemma is very important because, according to the Greenpeace forest expert Christoph Wiedmer, ancient forests are being destroyed for paper production in Finland, Canada and Russia.
