Shoot: Forests Protest IOC HQ in Switzerland

GP01QQH
At a meeting with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Greenpeace calls on representatives to support international appeals to protect the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Western Caucasus”, by calling for the relocation of various proposed Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics infrastructures outside the buffer zone. On arrival, Greenpeace hands over a pair of symbolic scales and an appeal signed by over 6,000 Russians to the IOC. The scales represent a high conservation value site of global importance on one side and, on the other, what this site is to be sacrificed for: a bobsleigh track for 10’000 one-time visitors and the Olympic village that is to be used for just three weeks of Olympic Games. The area under threat includes key habitats of such IUCN Red List animals as the West Caucasian goat and the Caucasian chamois. Furthermore one of the largest stands of old growth forests in the Western Caucasus might be destroyed.
