Shoot: Action on International Forests Day in Geneva

GP01TP7
On International Day of the Forests, twenty Greenpeace activists point out the dramatic situation of the Canadian ancient forests with an action at timber import company Bernard Bourquin SA. The Geneva-based company imports timber from regions where ancient forests are destroyed in irresponsible ways. Bernard Bourquin SA in Switzerland is the only regular customer of the Canadian timber company "Interfor". The protest is directed against both Bernard Bourquin SA and Interfor, who is responsible for the deforestation in the last great, untouched rain forests on the Pacific coast of Canada. Interfor has dropped out of the negotiations between the environmental groups and timber companies in British Columbia in Canada, and began to pursue timber production in ecologically valuable areas again. At environmental organizations, the company is known for being one of the worst destroyers of rain forests. A few hours ago Interfor agreed to declare certain forest areas under a moratorium, but not the Clayoquot Sound, which was recently named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Greenpeace therefore demands Bernard Bourquin SA that it will insist that also the Clayoquot Sound is integrated into the moratorium.
